ADA Title II web accessibility deadlines
Public schools, districts, public colleges, and state and local governments covered by Title II of the ADA must make their web content and mobile apps meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. After the Department of Justice extended the dates, the compliance dates are April 26, 2027 and April 26, 2028, depending on the entity.
Not legal advice
This page is a training summary of public sources. It is not legal advice, and a training session is not a finding that an institution complies.
When is the ADA Title II web accessibility compliance date for a school district?
Use the population rules in the table below. A school district is not a special district government under this rule.
- A city school district uses the city’s population.
- A county school district uses the county’s population.
- An independent school district uses the most recent Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE).
- ESEA Title I is federal education funding. It is not a web standard, and that funding does not pick the date. ADA Title I is employment. It is a different statute.
On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.

How do we meet the ADA Title II web rule deadline?
Confirm which date applies to your entity, then have the people who publish practice before that date. A one-time fix is not the whole job.
These are the planning steps public entities are told to take. The list is for training. It is not legal advice, and it is not a finding that an institution complies.
-
Confirm your date
Use the table above. State and local government entities with a total population of 50,000 or more, other than special district governments, use April 26, 2027. Public entities with a total population of less than 50,000, and special district governments, use April 26, 2028.
-
Inventory what delivers the program
List websites, mobile apps, documents, and third-party tools that deliver programs, services, or activities.
-
Train the people who publish
Faculty, teachers, clerks, web and IT staff, and anyone who posts documents or pages, so new content does not recreate barriers. Formats are on the training page.
-
Require WCAG 2.1 Level AA in procurement
Require WCAG 2.1 Level AA in procurement and in vendor agreements going forward.
-
Start with services people still use
Prioritize programs, services, and activities people use to apply, gain access, or participate. Repair those, then keep reviewing after the date.

Older pages that still say April 24, 2026
Some older pages and roadmaps still name April 24, 2026, or the previous smaller-entity date. Those were the original dates in the April 2024 final rule. The interim final rule published in the Federal Register on April 20, 2026 (document 2026-07663) extended the compliance dates to April 26, 2027 (entities with a total population of 50,000 or more, other than special district governments) and April 26, 2028 (entities under 50,000, and special district governments). It did not change the WCAG 2.1 Level AA technical standard.
On a11y.solutions, the date tables use April 26, 2027 and April 26, 2028. Prefer the ADA.gov fact sheet and the April 20, 2026 Federal Register notice over any page that still lists 2026 as the current deadline.
